John Edward Hertogs was born July 26, 1931, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Clarence and Helen (Quist) Hertogs. He graduated from Washburn High School in 1949 and on August 1, 1950, joined the US Marine Corps. He served in Korea, and following his honorable discharge on February 15, 1952, returned to Minneapolis. John married Marilyn Louise Conant on June 6, 1953, at Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. In 1962, his work took them to Toronto, Ontario, where they raised their family. Over the years they lived in Toronto, Chicago and Sacramento before returning to Minneapolis in 1983. Shortly after they moved to Northfield.

John was a member of Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church. He was active with the Northfield VFW, Lions Club, Meals-On-Wheels, and often volunteered his time when called upon. Spending vacation time and weekends with his family on the cabin cruiser on Georgian Bay was a favorite time. John was a friendly & compassionate "good guy". He will be missed.

Survivors include his 3 children: Barbara and husband Ted Gray of Richmond Hill, Ontario, Nancy and husband Jim Furlong of Springfield, Virginia, Steven and wife Sonia of Naperville, Illinois; 5 grandchildren: Sarah Gray, Kelly and Kevin Furlong, Sydney and Sean Hertogs; 2 sisters: Jane (Terry) Patrick of Brainerd, Mary Hertogs of Edina; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by Marilyn on December 18, 2009, and his parents.

John passed away with his family by his side on Wednesday afternoon, February 17, 2010, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, following a brief illness. He was 78.

Visitation will be 2-5PM on Sunday, February 21, 2010, at the Benson & Langehough Funeral Home. Private interment will be in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, with Rev. Bob Wertz officiating.

Memorials are preferred to Mt. Olive Lutheran Church or Three Links Care Center.
