Edgar E. Larson, age 87, of Northfield, passed away on Friday, July 2, at the Northfield Long Term Care Center surrounded by family. He was born January 29, 1923 to Joseph and Luella Larson in New Market Township.

Ed grew up on the farm where he was born. He was baptized and confirmed at West Christiania Lutheran Church in rural Lakeville. He served in the Navy from 1944 – 1946. His overseas tour of duty included stints in the South Pacific and Okinawa. He was a motor machinist’s mate third class on the USS Pakana.

Upon discharge, he began his farm equipment career with Kane Equipment in Rosemount. In 1950, Ed and his brother Morris started Larson Implement in downtown Northfield on Fourth Street. In 1956, they expanded by moving to the present location on North Highway 3. Ownership changed in 1977 when Ed and his son Larry became partners until Ed’s retirement in 1988.

Ed married Helen Pape, the love of his life, on July 3, 1948, in Renville, Minnesota. They were married 62 wonderful years and had 2 children, Linda and Larry. He was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, and he was a life member and past Commander of Northfield V.F.W. He was active in numerous other organizations over the years. He enjoyed dancing, card playing, snowmobiling, playing pool, fishing and hunting. Remote controlled airplanes became a hobby in his retirement. Ed and Helen also delighted in traveling in their RV and spending winters in Mesa, AZ.

Ed was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Helen; daughter Linda (Ron) Fjosne of New Hope, MN; son Larry (Ann) Larson of Northfield; 4 grandchildren, Grant (Dawn) Fjosne, Andy (Larissa) Larson, Mark Fjosne, Katy (Dave) Berglund; and 4 great-grandchildren, Isaac Larson, Ben Berglund, Mae Berglund, Avery Fjosne; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Alma Hall and Marie Markison; and 4 brothers: Henry, Hans, Morris and Raymond Larson.

Services will be held at 11:00AM, Thursday, July 8, 2010 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Northfield with Rev. John E. Quam officiating. Music will be provided by Daniel Fenn. Interment with full military honors will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Northfield. Visitation will be at Benson & Langehough Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 7, from 4:00 – 7:00PM. Pallbearers will be Ed’s 4 grandchildren. Memorials are preferred to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Northfield Long Term Care Center, or donor’s choice.
